Job Objective:

The Camp Counselor is responsible for the general care, safety and well-being of an assigned group of campers, including oversight of their overnight housing area.

Camp Dates: May through the end of July.

What You Will Do:

  • Care for the well-being and safety of assigned campers.
  • Participate in all camp activities, as assigned, and according to the camp schedule.
  • Encourage participation by campers in all camp activities.
  • Establish a camper routine for wake up and lights out each day to promote cabin management.
  • Make certain you understand the daily schedule and are on time to events.
  • Maintain a clean, neat and safe cabin environment at all times.
  • Ensure cabin space is in good repair. Report all maintenance concerns in a timely manner.
  • Provide control and assistance to your campers at meal times. Provide guidance in manners, conduct and clean-up for the dining room.
  • Teach, participate and/or support program activities as assigned or requested.
  • Participate in general sessions. Provide control and order during the session.
  • Promote spiritual growth and life decisions for your campers. Hold camper devotions/quiet time daily.
  • Understand and practice camp safety guidelines
  • Be sure campers on medications receive them per the schedule established by the Camp Health Officer.
  • Provide support to any program or services staff members assigned to assist in the cabin.
  • At the end of each camp session, clean cabin according to check out procedures and assist in cleaning and re-set of other camp program areas, as instructed.
  • Serve as scheduled in the camp activity areas for which certification has been obtained.
  • Know and understand the rules for camp activity areas and encourage appropriate camper/guest compliance.
  • Provide instructions at each activity area, as assigned, and provide opportunity for camper participation.
  • Adhere to policies in camp activity areas.
  • Comply with camp policies.
  • Observe the spiritual emphasis of camp.
  • Keep living quarters clean and neat at all times.
  • Practice courtesy in sharing living space with other camp staff members.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Participate in staff meetings, evaluation sessions and devotion times.
  • Must carry radio while camp is in session on your person.
  • Other tasks as assigned by Leadership

Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.

Education: Be a High School Student or above

Background Checks: This position will require a background check to be completed and all background check results will be reviewed.

Experience: Must be at least age 18 within the camping season. Must have experience working with children. Must have experience in relevant camp activities.

Certifications: Must complete Safe From Harm training within the first 30 days of employment. Must be able to complete provided training courses for camp activities as assigned.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be a Christian who demonstrates the principles of Christian living.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to manage time well in order to accomplish multiple tasks by a set schedule.
  • Able to relate God to campers in the natural setting of camp.
  • Ability to plan a lesson or activity
  • Ability to teach a concept or lead an activity for children or adults
  • Able to communicate well with other staff, campers and supervisors

Supervisory Responsibility: Supervises campers and other staff as assigned.

Physical Requirements Include:

  • Able to walk for extended periods of time and across uneven terrain.
  • Good speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity
  • Lifting materials up to 25 pounds and carry it for at least 50 feet.
  • Be physically fit enough to keep up with daily camp activities.

Travel: Position may require occasional local travel, including the use of camp vehicles across the camp property.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a residential camp setting; Work will be expected at varying and flexible times, including overnight and some scheduled weekends.
