Overview

RTI International seeks a prospect for the Community Violence Intervention and Prevention Research Internship within the Social, Statistical, & Environmental Sciences (SSES) unit.

This internship is a contract position. The employment contract is administered by Greene Resources Powered by Array, RTI's supplemental staffing partner.

The Center for Public Safety and Resilience within RTI's Justice Practice Area conducts innovative, high-quality research to improve public safety, equity, and the administration of justice, focusing primarily on violence prevention and harm reduction, victimization and resilience, justice workforce effectiveness, community engagement, and public safety and law enforcement components of the criminal legal system.

We are looking for a dependable, enthusiastic team member to support an ongoing evaluation funded by the National Institute of Justice of the Community Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative (CVIPI) in Greensboro, NC. CVI is an approach that uses evidence-informed strategies to reduce violence through tailored community-centered initiatives to engage individuals and groups to prevent and disrupt cycles of violence and retaliation, and establish relationships between individuals and community assets to deliver services that save lives, address trauma, provide opportunity, and improve the physical, social, and economic conditions that drive violence.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop skills in research design, data collection, and analysis
  • Learn skills in planning, coordinating various tasks and activities towards intended deliverables (i.e., research and recruitment materials, interview guides, surveys, reports, dissemination, presentations, etc.)
  • Advance knowledge in the areas of community violence, violence prevention and response, the criminal legal system, and community-law enforcement partnerships

Responsibilities

  • Assist with on-site and virtual data collection during research interviews and focus groups
  • Coordinate interview scheduling and communication with participation
  • Review and provide input into research-related tools and materials
  • Assist with data cleaning, analysis, data tracking, and reporting
  • Assist with literature reviews
  • Attend project team meetings as needed

Additional Information

This hybrid paid internship will take place from June 2024 through August 2024. The internship requires a minimum commitment of 10-15 hours per week. Hours are flexible during business hours, Monday through Friday.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Recent degree recipient (degree received after May 2024), or currently enrolled (advanced) undergraduate (junior or senior), or graduate student who studied or is studying one of the following fields: Anthropology, Communications, Criminology/CJ, Economics, English, Government History, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Public Health, Sociology, Social Work or another related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or interest in qualitative and/or quantitative research methodologies, including community-based participatory research approaches
  • Commitment to equitable and inclusive research and professional practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or interest in the field of violence reduction and prevention, particularly community violence which is defined as intentional and often severe acts of interpersonal violence committed in public spaces by individuals who are not intimately related to the victim.
    • Examples of severe acts may include homicides, aggravated assaults, stabbings, shootings and firearm-involved assaults, robberies, and gang-related disputes.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to craft professional email messages
  • Ability to organize and maintain structure and documentation for project-related needs
  • Reliable transportation to Greensboro, NC
  • Flexible schedule to allow for on-site data collection activities in Greensboro, NC
  • Must attach a cover letter
