Job Description

The Materials Manager is responsible for executing purchasing and inventory management activities for the entire $40M+ in spend for the Business Unit, with a focus on best practice processes and achieving an optimal supply chain relative to metrics of Quality, Cost, and Delivery as determined by the Business Unit.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop strategic plan to achieve supply chain objectives, to include identifying and implementing spend strategies for the entire BU - $40M+ in spend

  • Responsible for supporting new product development and the ECN process as it pertains to purchasing

  • Responsible to maintain and development a material cost savings funnel in line with the BU objectives. Responsible for driving identified and approved projects to completion

  • Conduct market analysis, internal demand analysis, supplier selection, and negotiation of price, terms and conditions to maximize contribution to operating profit and business objectives

  • Manage sourcing projects and assume responsibility for Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)

  • Develop and maintain supplier relationships and drive supplier performance and effectiveness. Complete supplier analysis to select the best suppliers and guarantee an optimal supply chain, conduct annual supplier evaluation, and execute formal supplier development plans when applicable

  • Manage supplier performance through supplier scorecards.

  • Measure weekly, quarterly and annual materials goals that support the business unit objectives

  • Utilize value stream mapping and other ABS (lean) tools to streamline processes and minimize inventory

  • Promote continuous improvement efforts for designated business unit(s) for the materials function

  • Participates in the S&OP process

  • Assist in product life cycle analysis process for the Mobile Power Value Stream

  • Oversee Purchasing Team which includes shipping and receiving (7 total - 2 being direct reports).

  • Maintain an assertive follow-up system to ensure schedule compliance.

  • Interface with Management, Supervision, Customer Service, Quality, Finance, Engineering and Operations.

  • Evaluates and suggests Make/Buy decisions

  • Negotiate MRO contracts and other major capital purchases.

  • May participate in company-wide global projects on an as needed basis.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in materials management, Business, Finance, Engineering, or related field, required

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a Material Manager role, required

  • Experience of Kanban process, preferred

  • Experience in managing suppliers of large tonnage stampings, copper/aluminum wire, & ball bearings, preferred

  • Ownership of inventory management utilizing a Kan Ban system

  • Strong negotiation skills, including a sound understanding of commercial, regulatory, and intellectual property elements of a contract

  • Strong knowledge of strategic sourcing methodology and its application

  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills, including a demonstrated ability to synthesize, interpret, and communicate market and competitive data

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of employees and managers, customers, and suppliers

  • Ability to manage contracts, identify elements of risk when developing complex agreements and make recommendations to guide the Legal review process

  • This position may require occasional travel, 15%. The employee must be able to fly or drive out of town to attend meetings with members of other company facilities or customers and suppliers or to attend training.
